The Bible was the first book that was press printed in Europe. For hundreds of years it imposed, spiritually and legally, the moral code accepted in the west. We Israelis speak Hebrew and we are Jews according to our official faith. Hence we understand the biblical language, in which the Torah was written, and keep some of the ancient Jewish tradition. The beliefs and ideas that were immortalized in the bible were also kept in the Hebrew language and will be discussed in details in the following chapters. We shall start the Memetic testimony (the Memes were mentioned on page 5) with the Hebrew letter Zain (ז) that turns out to be of an uppermost value.
In the biblical era letters were used as mathematical numbers, and the days of the week were coded by letters. Our ancestors already arranged their time back in those days, by seven days, and they had a holy day "Sabbath" (day Zain). The letter Zain is in contemporary Hebrew the symbol of males in general (and for the male sexual organ in particular), therefore we shall continue our investigative journey with a unique commandment (Mitzvah), that is practically related to the Zain. This is the commandment of "circumcision". This ritual sanctifies the increase of population through the language, and this fact is evident also from the interpretation of its name. How did this verbal and surgical mutation evolved, and why did it survive in the pool of ideas submerged into us today?
We have learned from Richard Dawkins that any idea that survives unchanged for thousands of years has a high survival value. Therefore we must first sort out the biological implications of circumcising babies. Studies that were done in the 1980s in the USA, examined the influence of cultural traditions on natural breastfeeding. The American researchers have found that circumcision breaks the Prolactin continuity in nursing mothers. The reason for this phenomenon: pain caused by cutting the tip of the baby's sexual pleasure center, causes him an acute physical distress, and in such situations endorphins are secreted to ease the pain (additionally the Stress Hormone – Cortisol – is secreted). The baby becomes apathetic and introverted under the influence of the endorphins, and the regular suckling from his mother's breasts stops for a few days. The painful trauma to the baby disrupts his regular suckling continuity, and results in lowering the Prolactin levels of the mother. The decrease in the hormone level triggers the beginning of a new ovulation in one of the ovaries of the nursing mother. 1
The additional ovulation is the biological basis which enables the mother to quickly become pregnant again with a new baby.
This is how the symbolic pact with God gives a great survival advantage to the believers (who follow all the rules of the Torah). Their advantage was quantitative. They had three folds the offspring relative to the believers in other religious rituals.
During the Memetic wars, that took place between the followers of various religions, the biblical Memes defeated most other religious ideas. At the end of the ancient battles, the puritan moral laws (determining monogamous marriage in a couple) became accepted for most human society.
The biblical covenant was signed between God (male) and Abraham's descendants. It contained a new religious belief therefore it contains the judicial meaning of the word "Brit" (covenant). The new faith was written originally in Hebrew and it is another covenant that existed between the Jewish faith and the Hebrew language, the covenant with the Hebrew words. Hebrew was considered a divine language, and was called "The holly tongue". Why did the Hebrew language win this title, what is the secret it contains?
The answer to this question is very sad: the Hebrew language sanctifies and bestows us with the cultural chauvinism. Thus for example, the word " זכר " (without punctuation) has double meaning. Its first meaning is a male (with a penis) and the other meaning is remembered in the context of memory. The two terms are written in the same way and we get their meaning and pronunciation as we read. That is, the word memory (זיכרון) is derived from the word זכר (male or remembered). This way the Hebrew language preserves the ancient chauvinistic message, in the roots of the Hebrew words.
